This was a vote on a resolution allowing the Senate to take its traditional Easter recess. There was no debate on the adjournment resolution. Republicans, however, sought to protest Democratic efforts to extend unemployment insurance and health insurance for laid-off workers without offsetting the budgetary cost of those extensions with spending cuts. Earlier in the day, Republicans had attempted to bring a up a bill that would have extended those programs but cut funding from the economic stimulus legislation signed into law by President Obama in 2009 in response to the economic crisis. Democrats successfully blocked debate on that bill. |
