This was an amendment to the larger energy plan that was proposed by Jeffords (I-VT). It would have required that up to 20 percent of the electricity generated by utilities to be from renewable energy sources. Currently, less than two percent comes from such sources. Progressives supported the measure as a way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and clean up the environment. However, the measure went down to bipartisan defeat, 29-70, with even a majority of Democrats voting against. |
